Celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week with ‘Visit Austin From Home’

Chris Mosser and Julie Chase

Traveling the globe and going from place to place may not be at the top of our to-do lists right now, but that’s not stopping Visit Austin from highlighting our community’s culture to everyone around the world, virtually.

National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) commemorates “the contributions and accomplishments of the U.S. travel industry.” The annual celebration, which occurs May 3 through May 9, has been interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. However, Visit Austin teamed up with the local community to provide virtual activities and events throughout the entire week. This year’s theme is Spirit of Travel.

Keeping the spirits alive during a time of uncertainty, Spirit of Travel signifies “hope in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.”

ACL Radio’s Chris Mosser chatted with Julie Chase of Visit Austin about the virtual festivities.

Chase said she’s looking forward to showcasing these activities to the local community. She hopes Visit Austin From Home will “provide inspiration because we need to get the visitors back. Travel and tourism is such an important part of our economy here in Austin and we really would like to see the hotels open, the restaurants, and folks getting back to work.”

Each day will highlight an activity that represents Austin culture. Live music, cuisine, local business and makers, and more are what you can find on Visit Austin From Home.

On Saturday, Austin From Home will premiere a live stream concert benefiting Austin musicians. On the lineup you’ll find Ray Benson, Hayes Carll, Walker Lukens, Gina Chavez, and more.

Check out the interview and be sure to Visit Austin From Home to see the full list of community activities.
