John Butler Trio Live in the Dell Music Lounge 12/7/18
Playing on street corners with just a guitar in hand, John Butler Trio has experienced organic success throughout a decade of making music. Forming in the late 1990s, the band has balanced their time between playing pub shows in Perth and producing their debut, self-titled EP. With an album in 2014 that went 5 times platinum, the group has found their place in the music scene through their distinct sound of reggae influence paired with folk instruments. This sound of theirs makes for an easy-listening, upbeat feel, which is exactly the vibe John Butler Trio brought to the Dell Music Lounge.
Although the band seems to have a newly found element of adding electronic rings on their latest album "Home," the John Butler Trio used wooden blocks and acoustic guitars to perform a raw, rustic performance. While singing one of the lead songs off the album “Home”, leadman John Butler showcased his raspy vocals while belting out the lyrics “I can’t find the direction, home, I can’t find the connection, home”.
From their folk twang to the addition of electric beats in Home, it’s hard to put John Butler Trio in one genre. But then again, maybe that's the best part. Finding their roots in Australia, John Butler Trio has proven to pave their own path and crossed the pond to make their voices heard in the US.
