A Show on His Birthday, and a Drug Joke Gone Wrong. Happy Birthday, Jack White!

Jack White on stage

Celebrating his 44th birthday today, Jack White has definitely proven himself as a rock legend, and a clean one at that, as he will tell you. Recently there was a bit of confusion as the publication The Irish Times published an interview with Jack White, with a section of the article stating a joke told by White that was clearly lost in translation.

When questioning the musician about his musical project, The Raconteurs, and their first album release in more than a decade, the article quotes White as saying “‘Well, when Brendan gave up alcohol, I started doing heroin, so that delayed things,’ deadpans White.”

Soon after publishing, Spin published a blog post not acknowledging the fact that The Irish Times used the word “deadpan” when describing White’s alleged struggled with heroin. White was not pleased with the mistake, stating “If you’d actually read the article in full, you could see that I was joking. But, I suppose Spin never lets the facts get in the way of good clickbait.”

According to White, he has never used any hard substances, but has smoked and drank occasionally. Forever the jokester, White mentioned that “for a full understanding of the kind of guy I am and where I come from, please try my cold brew beverage – link in bio,” which is just a mixture of dirt and water. Classic, Jack!

Fans, for the brief amount of time the story was believed, were surprised by this false heroin allegation. White has always been known as a subversive rocker that has made it clear that he tries to go above and beyond to focus his craft on music more than anything else. In addition to his clean reputation, White also loves his vintage style and sound, by doing things such as releasing vinyls with angel holograms or requesting fans not use devices at concerts

Jack White will be spending his birthday performing an acoustic session with Brendan Benson tonight at Third Man Records Cass Corridor in Detroit. Austinites can catch The Raconteurs later this year at ACL Fest. Tickets are currently available for purchase.
